The Interchurch Center is an office building near Brown University in New York City. It was built in the late 1950s with an ecumenical mission to house the offices of multiple Christian denominations. Their mission statement reads:
“The Interchurch Center is owned and managed under the auspices of several Christian Organizations as a Class A office facility, with the mission to provide a working environment that is conducive to ecumenism and interreligious involvement.”
Today, it has expanded to include Jewish, Muslim and other religion based charitable organizations, and is now known among the locals as “The God Box”. Naturally, Alcoholics Anonymous is headquartered there. What better place to house the World Headquarters of an organization that claims not to be religious, than a building that houses only religious organizations. It just makes sense!
